April 20th, also known as 4/20, is a cannabis-centric holiday where THC and CBD enthusiasts rejoice and indulge. There are a variety of theories behind how the 4/20 holiday came about, and critics have seemed to successfully debunk and crack the code. In this blog post we will discuss the history of cannabis’ most celebrated holiday, and ways to celebrate in a non-intoxicating manner with our variety of CBD products.
The History of 4/20
4/20 is a holiday that has been celebrated and traced back to the early 1970’s. There are a plethora of theories that have been known to be the reason for the birth of what is also known as cannabis’ Christmas. It was originally thought that 420 was the police code for illegal marijuana smoking before it became decriminalized in some states. Some also suggest that April 20th is a date that famous musicians such as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin associated with cannabis culture. Many of these theories have later been debunked by popular news sources, and it was decided that the date was merely a code used among five friends that attended San Rafael High School. The code meant that it was time to smoke, and the group of friends would meet outside at exactly 4:20 p.m.
Not only has 4/20 become a staple holiday for cannabis and CBD enthusiasts, but it also has become a day of activism for many. Some groups would gather and “light up” at exactly 4:20 p.m. on April 20th as an act of civil disobedience to lobby for less harsh regulations surrounding cannabis consumption. Later, large festivals surrounding the holiday emerged as a way for people to express freedom and embrace the cannabis culture. These festivals have been seen popping up in regions such as Washington and Colorado where cannabis is already legal. We are starting to see more of these events come to fruition as more states are decriminalizing consumption.
